Details

What are the normal weather and water conditions for this race?

September is fondly known as the "local's summer" on Lake Tahoe because the weather and water are still warm and most of the part-timers and visitors have packed up and headed home. Air temperatures are in the 70's or 80's and the water is still high 60's. An early morning race start virtually ensures flat, calm paddling conditions. The whole experience is pretty much ideal for small craft paddling.

How long does this race take?

Individual craft paddlers should plan to be on the water for 4 to 7 hours, while 2-person teams and OC6 boats will likely finish in 3 to 6 hours. In any case, be sure to bring sufficient water and nourishment for your full race. There are no on-course aid stations. You should plan to be self-sufficient. This is part of what makes this race epic and challenging, and so satisfying at the race finish.

What type of craft are included?

Go for the full experience and do the Crossing on an individual SUP, OC1, surf ski, or prone board. Make it more manageable on a 2-person outrigger or surf ski, or even better team up with your outrigger club crew and really crush it in an OC6 canoe.

How does the shuttle work?

Bring your boat and gear to the Finish location (Waterman's Landing in Carnelian Bay, CA) on Saturday morning and we'll shuttle you to the Start in South Lake Tahoe. Plan to be at the Start by 6:30 AM. There is a single shuttle caravan of gear and people that leaves Waterman's Landing, so the 6:30 AM arrival time is the only option if you are taking the shuttle.

Can I leave personal items at the Finish?

Yes, we have a secure area for your personal items (e.g. change of clothes, etc.) at the Finish area. When you arrive at the Finish area on Saturday morning for the shuttle, simply put your personal things in a plastic storage bag provided by the race and marked with your race number, and place them in the designated Personal Items area. It will be available when you finish the race - simply head to the same Personal Items area and show your race number to retrieve your bag.

Can I drive directly to the Start line?

Yes. You can arrange your own transportation to the Start line on Saturday morning. Plan to arrive at the Start area no later than 8:00 AM. You'll park your car or get dropped off at Lakeview Commons Beach, in the city of South Lake Tahoe. MAP  Keep in mind that the race finishes at Waterman's Landing in Carnelian Bay, CA which is a 36-mile drive and it is 1 hour by car from the Start back to the Finish (without traffic). DIRECTIONS

Will you shuttle OC6 outrigger canoes?

Unfortunately, we can not shuttle OC6 canoes. You must transport your OC6 canoe to the Start area. There is ample pull-through parking for your OC6 trailer at the race Start at Lakeview Commons Beach, in the city of South Lake Tahoe. MAP  You will need to drive your trailer back to the Finish at Waterman's Landing in Carnelian Bay, CA which is a 36-mile drive and it is 1 hour by car from the Start back to the Finish (without traffic). DIRECTIONS

What are the prize categories?

Podium prizes will be awarded by gender, age, and craft type.
