12/20/2024 Waterman Foundation selected as Alpenglow Sports winter speaker series nonprofitRead NowFive adventure packed shows, five inspiring speakers, five nonprofits supported Tahoe City, CA --Alpenglow Sports is excited to announce the lineup for their 19th annual Winter Speaker Series season. On Thursday, December 12th, the series will kick off with professional snowboarder and filmmaker, Leanne Pelosi , and the nonprofit organization, the Scotty Lapp Foundation. The series continues with pioneering snowboarder, and cancer survivor Kimmy Fasani (1/2/25), acclaimed skier and author Greg Hill (1/24/25), climbing, mountaineering, and skiing AMGA guide Angela Hawse (2/7/25), and the cornerstone of the series, renowned local guide and mountaineer, Dave Nettle (2/28/25). While their stories are unique, this unbelievable group of mountain athletes promise to deliver shows that are equal parts adventure and human experience. The Alpenglow Sports Winter Speaker Series is an eagerly anticipated winter tradition for North Tahoe’s adventure community. With over 3,000 attendees annually, as well as a dynamic and global live stream component, the 19-year-old Alpenglow Sports Winter Speaker Series has become one of the premier North American forums for adventure storytelling and community gathering. Five times per winter, a premier outdoor athlete presents an inspirational tale of adventure, creating a forum for motivation, inspiration and education. Past speakers of the Winter Speaker Series include Lynn Hill , Hilaree Nelson , Jeremy Jones , Emily Harrington , Cody Townsend , Alex Honnold , Adrian Ballinger , and more. The series runs from December through March at the Olympic Village Event Center at Palisades Tahoe. Every show is FREE to the public and all ages are encouraged to attend. Each show is dedicated to a different nonprofit and to date, the Winter Speaker Series has raised over $1,775,000 for local organizations. Giveaway and bar proceeds, in conjunction with anonymous donations by the Donor Party, traditionally raise up to $75,000 per show for a hand-picked, local nonprofit organization. For the 2024-25 season, the nonprofit beneficiaries include the Scotty Lapp Foundation , Lake Tahoe Waterman Association , Courage Project , Headwaters Science Institute , and TAMBA. Broadly, this group of organizations provides access to community, outdoor recreation opportunities, and educational programs. From a community gathering place in a skate park to an adaptive paddling program to youth mental health support to equal access to science education in our school system to trail building/maintenance, the common thread is accessibility for all and as a result, these programs are incredibly life changing for so many within the Tahoe Basin. Every show will offer an opportunity to interact with the people behind these organizations and learn more! To further support the nonprofit beneficiaries this season, the Tahoe Fund has committed to be a matching donor for the series. As a result, the Tahoe Fund will match $19,000 of funds raised in-person for the series, 100% of which will be distributed to the five nonprofit beneficiaries! This opportunity bolsters one of the ultimate goals of the series to be a meaningful partner for nonprofit organizations in North Lake Tahoe and Truckee. Every show this season will have food available for purchase from MOGROG Rotisserie , a wide offering of drinks at the bar thanks to Alibi Ale Works , and Best Day Brewing , and two incredible giveaways as a result of the generosity of athlete sponsors and event sponsors. One giveaway is designed for all in-person attendees, while the second is for viewers tuning in from afar via the livestream offering. The prizes for each giveaway are different and attendees can participate in BOTH. All winners will be drawn at the event. Just prior to the show, all in-person giveaway winners and three online winners will be chosen. The remaining seven online winners will be drawn, and posted, after the show ends. All online winners will also be contacted by email. Head over to Alpenglow Sports’ website to check out event details, and to learn more about the presenting athlete and the nonprofit beneficiaries of each show. You will also be able to access the livestreams via each event page. Please know that no registration is required for access. The Waterman Foundation’s Adaptive Paddling Program provides access to professional paddle coaching resources and specialized paddle sports equipment for people facing life-changing mental or physical health challenges in North Lake Tahoe and surrounding communities. “Water has tremendous healing potential for the human mind, body, and spirit,” said Justin Broglio, President of the Tahoe Waterman Foundation. “Our goal is to provide a unique experience and a path to personal growth and recovery for those in our community without a way to get on the water and who otherwise may not have considered paddling as something they could do or as an active form of mental and physical therapy.” With support from the California Tahoe Conservancy, registration for the Adaptive Paddling Program is now open to youth or adults with cognitive, sensory, mental health, and physical disabilities. In its first year, the program will also provide youth paddling experiences for underserved and underprivileged youth in the North Lake Tahoe area. Based in Carnelian Bay at Waterman’s Landing Cafe and Patton Beach, the Adaptive Paddling Program utilizes traditional and adaptive paddle sports equipment, including a specialized outrigger canoe (a Double-ama Draco) designed by Kai Wa’a Canoes and manufactured through Outrigger Zone. The Waterman Foundation secured the new adaptive outrigger canoe through a community project grant from the Tahoe Fund. "Spending time in the water has always been a place of calm for me,” said Forrest Shepherd, one of the first participants in the Adaptive Paddling Program and a member of the High Fives Foundation’s Military to Mountains program. “This is definitively a new chapter in life for me,” Shepherd added. “I am looking forward to continuing to challenge myself, and I am sincerely grateful for the opportunity to spend time on the water and continue my journey as a waterman." Shepherd is a first responder who has served as a Firefighter, EMT, EMD, and Technical Rescue Instructor, specializing in water rescue. He is recovering from multiple fractures with damage to his spinal cord, while also battling Complex PTSD resulting from his service responding to emergencies and natural disasters such as Hurricane Harvey, and a mass shooting that devastated a small Texas community in 2017. "Our mission is to improve the Lake Tahoe environment for all to enjoy," said Amy Berry, Tahoe Fund CEO. "We are thrilled to support the Tahoe Waterman Foundation as they make it possible for athletes like Forrest to recreate outdoors and enjoy the beauty that Lake Tahoe has to offer." As a non-profit organization, the Tahoe Waterman Foundation is dedicated to helping people of all ages and abilities experience the healing power of water through paddle sports. The Adaptive Paddling Program is supported by the California Tahoe Conservancy, the High Fives Foundation, and the Tahoe Fund. The California Tahoe Conservancy Board has awarded four grants, totaling $409,000, to nonprofit organizations to improve equitable access to Lake Tahoe’s beaches, trails, and mountains. “Expanding opportunities for people to enjoy the extraordinary recreational resources of the Lake Tahoe Basin is a core part of our mission,” said Conservancy Board Chair Adam Acosta. “Work funded by these grants will help underserved and underrepresented people overcome physical barriers to accessing outdoor experiences.” At its meeting today, the Conservancy Board authorized the grants to improve equitable access by investing in programs and projects that serve people of all races, ethnicities, physical abilities, and backgrounds. The waterman Foundation is beyond excited to be one of the grantee recipient because Lake Tahoe is a world-class outdoor recreation destination and many people face barriers to accessing and enjoying its opportunities, the Waterman's Foundation will fulfill their mission to provide the gift of paddling and put more people on Tahoe Waters of Lake Tahoe. The Waterman Foundation was awarded $84,000 to provide transformative paddling experiences — based at a lakefront Conservancy property in Carnelian Bay—for under-resourced youth, people confronting physical disabilities, and those facing mental health challenges. Congrats to all the additional grantees:
The board of directors at the Waterman Foundation would like to sincerely thank the team at the CTC (California Tahoe Conservancy) and the Board of Directors for believing in our mission and supporting this program. |
